SafeSens

Blood Cell Storage, Inc. (BCSI), founded in 1999, develops technology platforms utilizing fluorescent dye, micro-fluidics, and nucleic acid extraction to reduce healthcare costs and improve patient outcomes. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the company initially focused on pH fluorescent sensor products for platelet storage, later expanding into IVF and cell culture with its SAFESens solutions. BCSI collaborates with research institutions worldwide and consists of a diverse team of experts committed to advancing medical devices.

  • The SAFESens sv2 Sensor is an innovative tool designed for continuous and accurate tracking of pH changes in culture media during in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. This modified optical cuvette sensor fits into a fiber optic fixture and features a membrane impregnated with a fluorescent dye that emits light at varying wavelength spectra according to different pH levels. Every batch of sv2 sensors has a variance tolerance of ±0.05 pH units, offering a reliable and precise measurement tool. The sensor's pH values align well with those collected using a blood gas analyzer (BGA), providing similar reading capacity without the need for extensive calibration steps. The sv2 sensor also proves accurate in the presence of multiple potential interfering substances, such as Phenol Red, variable protein supplementation, and varying salt concentrations. This non-invasive and disposable sv2 sensor uniquely employs pH-sensitive fluorescent dye, providing pH data every 30 minutes for up to 7 days without occupying valuable culture dish space in the incubator. Compared to conventional pH measurement methods, which only provide point-in-time values and are prone to human error, the sv2 sensor offers continuous, accurate, and automated pH tracking.

  • The SAFE Sens TrakStation pH Monitoring System is an advanced tool designed for the precise monitoring of pH levels during in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. This system utilizes innovative optical fluorescent measurement technology and disposable sensors, resulting in accurate and reliable pH tracking in small volumes of fluids, such as those used in IVF. Each sensor is equipped with a proprietary fluorescent dye sensitive to pH changes, providing continuous, non-invasive measurements. Sensors, certified by the manufacturer, are sterile and maintain their accuracy for seven days. The system also offers flexibility, with a single TrakStation able to connect with up to eight TrakPods, accommodating multiple large format incubators or desktop chambers. Most notably, the SAFE Sens TrakStation ensures stable and appropriate external pH levels, crucial for successful embryo culture, without the need to remove samples from the incubator. This contributes to a more efficient IVF procedure by minimizing disturbances to the culture environment.
